Ready for Another Quilt Along? Thank your Lucky Stars!

Summer is a great time to start a new quilt. With more lazy days and fewer responsibilities you can sew to your heart’s content! Luckily, my friends Heather and Megan over at Quilt Story are launching a brand new summer quilt along. They are calling it Lucky Stars featuring Bonnie and Camille’s Happy Go Lucky line.

Heather's Luck Stars

Heather’s Patriotic Lucky Stars

Heather has chosen to make her quilt in patriotic red, white and blue.

Megan has made hers in shades of aqua, lime and navy with a hint of yellow and grey:

Megan's Lucky Stars

Megan’s Modern Lucky Stars

Aren’t they both fabulous? And so different from the same set of precuts!

Heather and Megan have asked me to provide some fabric for the quilt along and I’m happy to oblige. I’ve put together a starter kit combo of one Jelly Roll and one Layer Cake of Happy Go Lucky which will allow you to make either quilt! All you have to do is add 2.5 yards background fabric in whichever color scheme you wish.

I’ve selected a few coordinating prints that you can choose for background, binding or backing.

Heather chose light aqua penny dots for her background while Megan chose the darker navy penny dots for hers.

I know it’s a lot of fabric to invest in a quilt, so to make it easier on the budget I’m also offering this coupon: use code STORY to save an extra 10% off your entire order. Plus you will automatically get FREE US shipping (discounted int’l shipping), too!

And of course, you can pick fabrics from your own stash, too. Be sure to bookmark Heather and Megan’s blog so you don’t miss out on all the updates. Happy quilting!

Christa’s Quilt Along 6.1 – String of Pearls Fabric Cutting

Welcome to my String of Pearls Quilt Along. Please work at your own pace and remember, these posts will be a permanent part of my quilt along series, so you can refer back to them whenever you like!

String of Pearls

String of Pearls 66″ x 66″
Designed in EQ7

About This Quilt

Each of the Pearl Blocks is made from one pearl “square” surrounded by a strong black accent, floating against a sea of grey.

It’s an efficient quilt to cut because it makes use of the leftover pearl fabric for the binding.

I used 12 different Pearl Bracelets fabrics (3 squares each) but you can make yours as scrappy or as coordinated as you like.

The quilt size is 66″ x 66″ and  is made from a total of 36 blocks that are 11″ finished. If you’d like a bigger quilt, just make more blocks or add colorful borders!

Total cutting time for today’s lesson took approximately 2 hours. Note, “WOF” means “width of fabric”. My measurements are based on 40″ of useable width.

Step 1 – Cutting The Pearls (45 minutes)

Wash and press your pearl fabrics and starch them if you like. You will need exactly 7.75 inches inches of usable width out of 9 inches. It’s ok if your fabrics shrink up a little, but take care when you cut so you don’t lose too much waste.

Hint: wash lights and darks separately in a garment mesh bag on gentle cycle. Throw a dye magnet in the wash to catch any excess dye.

Pearl Bracelets Bundle

String of Pearls Fat Eighths Bundle

From each of twelve 9″x20″ fat eighths of Pearl Bracelets, cut:

  • 1 (5.5″) strip and subcut into 3 (5.5″) squares
  • 1 (2.25″ x 20″) strip for binding

Pearl StripsString of Pearl Squares

For a total of 36 pearl squares and 12 strips of scrappy binding. By the way, I just love the Olfa Splash rotary cutter I’m using. Its cute and ergonomic!

String of Pearls Cut Pieces

Step 2 – Cutting the Backgrounds (1 Hour, 15 Minutes )

There is very little waste when cutting and you may lose an inch or two to washing and trimming. If you are new to cutting, be sure to add on an extra 1/8 to 1/4 yard to the measurements below.

Hint: Be sure to measure twice, and cut once.

For those of you purchasing kits, I’ve thrown in a couple of extra inches of black and grey solid just to be on the safe side.

From 1.5 yards of black accent fabric cut 34 (1.5″ x WOF)  strips.

Black Strips

Cut 34 Black Strips – 1.5″ Wide by WOF

  • From 14.5  strips, cut 72 (1.5″ x 7.5″ ) rectangles – you should get 5 per strip.
  • From 10.5 strips, cut 72 (1.5″ x 5.5″) rectangles – you should get 7 per strip.
  • Cut 1 strip in half so that you have 2 (1.5″ x 20″) strips and set aside.
  • Set aside the remaining 8 strips for strip piecing in lesson 2.

Hint: if you stack them up 4 per pile as you cut, it will take 18 piles of each. That helps me count!

Cut Black Pieces

72 (1.5 x 7.5 in.), 72 (1.5 x 5.5 in.) 2 half strips, 8 full strips

From 2.5 yards of grey background, cut 9 (5.5″) strips and 9 (3.5″) strips

  • Cut one of the 5.5″ wide strips  in half so you have 8 full-length strips (5.5″ x WOF) and 2 half-length strips (5.5″ x 20″).
  • Cut one of the 3.5″ wide strips in half so you have 8 full-length strips (3.5″ x WOF) and 2 half-length strips 3.5″ x 20″).
  • Set aside for strip piecing in lesson 2.
Grey Strips

Grey Strips – 9 (5.5 in.), 9 (3.5 in.)

That’s it for today’s lesson. Now you’re ready to sew!

Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild Meeting – May 2013

Last night I attended a meeting of the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild. I joined in February, as soon as I returned home from QuiltCon and was inspired to find my local group of modern quilters. I’m sure glad I did, because even though it’s a small group, they have quite a bit of fun! (You can read my previous blog entry about them here.)

LVMQG

Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild

To start off the evening we worked on a couple of charity projects. There’s a program called Reading for Rover which pairs up kids who need extra reading practice with a cuddly pup to read to. They sit on a quilt at a local library together for some quality reading and pet time.

Charity Sewing

Regina and Christa sewing a charity quilt top.

Here’s one of the member’s finished quilts that she made to donate to the cause. Isn’t it the cutest?

Another ongoing project the group is doing is making these adorable “Plus X” blocks which will be donated as a raffle quilt to the Candlelighter’s association. I took home a few extra block kits to work on myself. I love these colors! Patti, the organizer, found a wonderful pieced block tutorial from Amy Badskirt’s blog here.

The group is also participating in a mug rug swap with the Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild. Here are a few of our completed mug rugs. It will be fun to see what we receive in return!

Part of every meeting features fantastic show and tell. Sandy shared a colorful Jelly Roll quilt she made.

I like the backing just as much as the front. The quilting adds such great texture!

Jelly Roll Quilt Back

I met Nichol for the first time as she debuted this extra large colorful star quilt that she’s going to quilt on her long-arm. As we chatted, we found out that we are close in age and have a couple of boys the same age, too! (Minus the baby so she’s ahead of me there!!)

Nichol's Star Top

I also met Carolina who’s recently joined the Art Gallery fat quarter gang (can we say – jealous)! She has a “squishable fabric blocks” tutorial up on the Art Gallery Blog that is terrific.  I also love her Urban Sprawl quilt she’s working on right now:

Here are a couple of other beauties that were shown last night. I love how everyone tried to hide behind their quilts for photos. :-) Now I better get crackin’ so I’ll have something to share for show and tell next month!

WIP Wednesday – 3 Summer Quilt Projects to Work On

Today I thought I would do a little WIP roundup. I have a ton of UFO’s but sometimes it’s just nice to start a couple of new projects. Before I started, I rearranged my sewing space. I moved my sewing table so that it’s right in front of a window now, giving me more natural daytime light. I love it!

Sewing TableFor starters, I’m making some headway on my “Quilty” quilt. That’s what I’m calling it for now until it’s officially published and named. Be sure to sign up for Quilty’s Auto-Ship Subscription so you don’t miss it when it comes out later this year.

Quilt HST'sI cut hundreds of colorful squares and had fun whipping them up into scores of HST’s. You just can’t go wrong with half-square triangles. (The colors are a little off in this picture but it’s still a yummy pile of triangle sandwiches!)

Next, I washed all of the fabric for my String of Pearls Quilt Along which starts next week. After my recent quilt disaster, I prewash as much as I can using color catcher sheets. I have this wonderful wooden bannister that I use indoors to hang dry my fabrics.

Pearl BraceletsSince I was working with smaller cuts of fabrics (chubby 1/8ths to be exact), I washed them on a very gentle cycle in a couple of mesh garment bags so they wouldn’t get all tangled. They are a little wrinkly as they dry – but nothing a bit of starch and an iron can’t take care of!

Finally, I’ve decided to remake my popular Jolly Jelly Roll Quilt using an In From the Cold Quilt Kit. I’ll be working on it during the Kate Spain Blog Hop in June. So far I’ve washed my coordinate fabric and have starched all my strips. I think I’ll whip up a few individual tutorials while I make this quilt, so be on the lookout for that.

In From the ColdHere are a couple of other ideas that are just in the design stages as of now. My hubby’s been helping me a sketch a few designs on his ipad which may or may not get turned into quilts. But it’s fun to explore ideas.

Rain Sketch

Rain is a color study Jason came up with. He calls it Meteor Shower, but it looks more like Rain to me. :-) It’s totally modern and I can see myself eventually turning this one into a published pattern.

Ski Sketch

Ski was inspired by a recent ski trip and has real potential for some interesting quilting.

I think that’s a good start for my summer sewing plans. With a more relaxed schedule over the next few months, I intend to do a lot of sewing in between trips to the pool and family vacations….

My Modern Crafty Friend – and a Fabulous Herringbone Quilt

I just had to share some sew and tell today from my friend Alexis who blogs over at Persia Lou. (Pictures re-posted with permission.) She made these 2 lovely modern herringbone quilts for her kids’ room. Aren’t they fabulous?

Modern Herringbone QuiltsShe’s going with a vintage Disney theme for their room and the quilts will be a focal point.

Disney RoomI’m so proud of Alexis because she took the plunge and quilted them herself on her not-too fancy Singer sewing machine. If she can do it, so can you!

Machine QuiltingHere’s a great closeup diagram that Alexis made, detailing her stitching plan:

Quilting PlanAlexis got some solid fabric from me and used my Charming Chevrons quilt along as a guide.  She enlarged the design by cutting 8″ squares instead of 5″. By simplifying the color palette and tweaking the blocks a little, she really made them her own.

Blue HerringboneIsn’t it amazing how a quilt design can evolve just by changing the colors and rotation of the blocks? Nice job, Alexis!!
